On July 15, 2006 Rubye's Kids, Inc. dedicated our first children's library/reading corner at a homeless shelter in memory of Henny Sitron an extraordinary gentleman, who along with his wife Shirley, supported Rubye's Kids by contributing to the shelter birthday parties and honoring people throughout the year with contributions. Henny died suddenly from a stroke on May 9th . Shirley asked that contributions in his memory be made to Rubye's Kids. We used the proceeds to create the Rubye's Kids Library and Reading Corner, which includied ninety books, a bookcase and a plaque memorializing Henny.
Cheryl Goldberg secured a list of desirable and appealing children's book from Lynne Rudolph, her school librarian. Angel Meenan, chairperson of the project, along with Shirley Sitron, Howard Sitron, Shirley and Henny son, personally selected and purchased the books. Angel prepared a box of library cards and gave the children instructions on how to use a library. Don Weiss created bookplates that read "This book is dedicated to ____Shelter in memory of Henny Sitron, and Angel adhered the labels to each book. On Saturday morning a group of volunteers, Angel Meenan, Shirely Sitron, Howard Sitron, Sara Sitron (Henny's granddaughter), Rose Weisblatt, Tanya Caesar, Bonna Weizer, Sheryl Sheppard and Roz Weiss dedicated the library and spent time reading to the children and listening to those children who could read, read to them. It was emotional when Roz dedicated the plaque and drew a parallel between Rubye Caesar and Henny Sitron, two people who knew the importance of helping children. The children were immediately drawn to the books. They were so receptive to being read to and were proud of their reading. When one book was finished they selected another. They could not get enough of the reading and the love and caring of the volunteers. How gratifying to see these beautiful faces light up while listening to a story and to see hope in their eyes. It was an experience to be remembered and treasured by everyone. As a result of this experience our goal is to duplicate Rubye's Kids Library and Reading Corner in as many shelters as we can. It is not a difficult project to put in place. We need volunteers to be in charge of individual shelters and enroll others, friends and family, to read to children on a monthly basis. This is truly a way to make a difference in the life of a child. Are you moved to participate in this project? Contact Roz Weiss at 215-887-7100 or rubyeskids@aol.com |
