Our Current Projects:

"Rubye's Kids Holiday Party" is an annual event held on the 2nd Saturday in December that provides a day of joy for 500+ inner city elementary school age children, selected by their schools and shelters in Philadelphia. Children enjoy a hot lunch, musical entertainment, clowns, activities, carnival games, receive books, hats and gloves, have a photo with Santa and select a present from hundreds of gifts in Toyland. These children, who would have had nothing for the holiday, go home with not only essential winter gear and school supplies, but also lasting memories of having fun and being loved by everyone.

Rubye's Kids Learning Centers

Goal: To provide homeless children a space to enhance their reading abilities, practice computer skills, complete homework assignments, and experience some much needed joy in a pleasant environment. Features include:

Dedicated room in homeless shelters
Quiet space to promote education
Library with age appropriate books, networked computer stations, board Games

Result: Three centers established since 2008

Rubye's Kids Emergency School Supply Closet: Prepared semi-annually in August and January, distributed in September and February

Goal: To provide needy children essential school supplies and board games for indoor recess in the ten elementary schools and shelters that attend Rubye's Kids Holiday Party.

Contents: Containers filled with composition books, crayons, markers, pencil cases, pencils, sharpeners, rulers, whiteboard markers, glue, scissors, folders, binders, filler paper, spiral notebooks, and assorted board games.

Result: Three inner-city schools currently have Rubye's Kids Closets

Rubye's Kids Birthday Parties: Held Quarterly

Goal: To celebrate the birthday of each child living in the shelter system, promoting self esteem and self worth. Participants receive birthday cake and refreshments, gifts, and books. Craft projects and entertainment are provided.

Result:

Fourteen birthday parties in homeless shelters since 2007
Provided birthday celebrations for 300+ children

Rubye's Kids Backpack Project

Goal: To provide children living in homeless shelters with school supplies essential for success in school, and to provide Welcome Backpacks for children arriving in the shelter during the year.

Prepared annually in August, distributed in September

Contents:

All backpacks filled with pencil cases, pencils, sharpeners, rulers, whiteboard markers, glue, sticks and folders.
150 backpacks for young students including composition books, crayons, and markers
150 backpacks for older students including binders, filler paper and spiral notebooks

Result: 300 Backpacks distributed annually since 2007
